Nigeria Government Unveils ₦100 Million AI Fund for Startups in Collaboration with Google

In a groundbreaking move to foster innovation, the Nigerian government has partnered with tech giant Google to launch a ₦100 million fund aimed at empowering AI-focused startups. Nigeria Government’s Vision for AI Innovation

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Announced this exciting development on September 10, 2024. The fund is set to turbocharge Nigeria’s growing tech scene by identifying and backing AI startups with big potential.

“If we get it right in the public sector, it will permeate the private sector. With time, the adoption and deployment of AI will not only transform our national lives but will shape the future of things in our country,” Dr. Tijani explained.

The Nigerian government has also drafted a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy document, which is expected to shape future AI policy and guide government efforts.

Google’s Commitment to African Tech

Google’s involvement in this fund aligns with its ongoing efforts to boost digital skills across Africa. Olumide Balogun, Google’s West Africa Director, stated that this partnership is part of their larger plan to enhance tech capabilities in Nigeria and beyond.

This news comes hot on the heels of Google’s recent announcement of its latest Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program. This program focuses on creating Africa-centric products and services using AI, with five Nigerian startups among the ten selected participants.
